Cobbler shaker
A three-piece cocktail shaker with a built-in strainer and cap, easy for beginners but prone to sticking when very cold.
A cobbler shaker is a single shaker built from three parts, a base tin, a lid with a perforated built-in strainer, and a small cap that also doubles as a measure. Because everything you need is in one unit, it is the shaker most often sold in starter bar kits and the one many people learn on first.
Its main advantage is convenience. There is no second piece to fumble with and no separate strainer to find, which makes it approachable for anyone just starting to make drinks at home. The tradeoff is that the tight metal fit between the pieces can seize up after a cold, hard shake, since the metal contracts unevenly, leaving the cap stuck.
If a cobbler shaker jams, running warm water over the joint or giving the base a firm tap against a padded surface usually breaks the seal. When shopping, favor one with a wide, sturdy cap and a strainer with enough small holes to keep pulp and ice shards out of the glass. Buying a spare cap is worth it since it is the piece most often misplaced.
